London "Pick your own" You are invited to savour and experience the capital city through the taste of apples. Throughout London, you can buy a huge variety of colourful and attractive fruits. Have you ever wondered where they all come from? Most have travelled half the way around the world to be sold in the UK. "Food miles", the distance produce travels, has a negative impact on the environment, increasing carbon emissions and energy consumption. Imported fruits, stockpiled throughout the year, lose their freshness. In addition, imported produce not only erodes the market for locally grown fruit but also obscures a long history of English apple growing. The project promotes eating traditional apples, grown by local farmers, supporting environmental sustainability and enticing visitors to explore the outskirts of London. Discover the fascinating ‘pick-your-own' farms and experience tastes that the English been enjoying for hundreds of years. Just follow the directions on the apple labels. |
